Why declutter and organize?

Many of us have underestimated the power our physical environment has on our mental wellbeing.

After learning to spend most of our time at home due to the pandemic, we may have experienced the effects of a clutter-filled space on our productivity. When you’re working and living in the same space, it should facilitate your creativity and productivity instead of being a hinderance.

Clutter can be distracting and debilitating.

If you are trying to accomplish a task, clutter in your physical environment can get in your way physically and mentally. Sometimes the mess literally gets in your way and there isn’t any space for you to accomplish your task. Other times you may get distracted and lose focus of what you’re trying to accomplish. Have you ever entered a space in your house, only to back out right away because you cannot function in it? Or when you try to get work done and cannot concentrate or get anything done because of everything around you? If so, you might just be in need of some decluttering.

The Power of Decluttering and Organization

It clears the physical space so we can partake in the activity.

When you get rid of the junk in your life that’s taking up valuable real estate in your home, you have more space for the things you value, need, and use regularly. What organization translates to in the physical space is that all items are placed together into proper sections and areas of your home they should belong in.

For example, your clothes should not be spread out through your room, the guest room, your attic, and your garage. They should all be in your closet and bedroom, where you would naturally go to find clothes to wear. Likewise, your food should stay in your kitchen and your office supplies should stay in an office, or a designated area of your home if you don’t have one. Wherever you tend to do a certain activity is where its respective section should be. When we set up our space to be organized and assign spaces for our various objects, we will have an easier time conducting ourselves.

It provides us with a sense of accomplishment which translates into motivation.

At the end of the day, decluttering is a form of self-care by making a space that treats you well. For some, there is a larger purpose of letting go of items they’ve been holding onto in order to move on from the past. And it’s in fact setting you up for success in the future. The less time you waste looking for items around your house, the more time you have to spend on activities that truly matter to you.
